Principles for safely and ethically harnessing Canadian health data to unlock innovation, economic growth, and better patient care

Artificial intelligence (AI) has opened the door to innovations that are transforming healthcare in Canada. INOVAIT’s proposed Principles for Safe, Ethical, and Trustworthy Canadian Health Data Licensing are a framework for healthcare institutions to confidently and responsibly engage in health data licensing in support of health innovation. These principles recognize the value of health data for bettering the health and well-being of Canadians while being grounded in transparency, ethical and responsible practices, patient and public representation, well-defined governance and oversight, and Indigenous data sovereignty rights and engagement. This framework is an initiative of INOVAIT’s Health Data Sharing & Governance Working Group and was created with the input of experts from across Canada.

INOVAIT’S HEALTH DATA SHARING & GOVERNANCE WORKING GROUP

The purpose of the INOVAIT Health Data Sharing & Governance Working Group is to support safe and efficient health data sharing and good data governance practices for Canadian healthcare AI technology research and innovation. It undertakes initiatives to unlock and harness the potential of health data to empower healthcare institutions for research and commercialization, while creating and maintaining a high level of public trust, safety, and autonomy.

The INOVAIT Health Data Sharing & Governance Working Group leverages the knowledge and expertise of its members and the connected ecosystem to ensure durable and robust protections for Canadians, while: fostering the secure, ethical, and efficient sharing of health data for applied AI research; promoting good data governance practices to elevate the quality, scale, and impact of research; and enabling innovation and commercialization of AI technologies with the potential to revolutionize patient care.
